Peixoto Issues Worrying Trippier Injury Update Ahead of Sheffield United Clash

César Peixoto has delivered a cautious and concerning update on Kieran Trippier’s fitness ahead of Wolves’ Championship trip to Sheffield United, confirming that the experienced right-back remains short of full match readiness despite returning to training.

The 35-year-old, who joined Wolves on a free transfer from Newcastle United in the summer, has been sidelined since suffering a medial collateral ligament injury in his left knee during the opening-day 2-2 draw with Blackburn Rovers. That setback ruled him out of the early weeks of the campaign and deprived Peixoto of one of his most important summer arrivals — a leader, a set-piece threat and a player signed specifically to bring Premier League know-how to a squad tasked with immediate promotion.

Speaking in the build-up to the Bramall Lane fixture, Peixoto revealed that Trippier has rejoined group training but is not yet in a position to start. The manager’s comments made clear that any involvement would be carefully managed and limited.

“Kieran Trippier has started training but won’t start the game,” Peixoto said. “We’re going to see if he has the capacity to go with us and get some minutes.”

The tone was deliberately restrained. There was no suggestion of an imminent return to the starting eleven, nor any guarantee that Trippier would even be risked from the bench. In the context of a player of his age and recent injury history, the update has been interpreted by many supporters as worrying. A full recovery from an MCL issue can be unpredictable, and the club’s medical staff are evidently prioritising long-term availability over any short-term boost.

Peixoto expanded on the broader injury picture, revealing that midfielder Jean-Ricner Bellegarde is in a similar position — back in training and a possible option for limited minutes, but far from match sharp. Other absentees, including Yerson Mosquera and Rafiki Said, remain further away. The cumulative effect is a squad still missing several key pieces at a stage of the season when consistency is vital.

“I want to rush them, but the medical department won’t let me,” Peixoto admitted with a smile that carried an edge of frustration. “Of course, if we have everybody together, we’re stronger. We have more options and more quality for the games. But it’s better to be calm and make sure they don’t suffer another setback. I want to go faster, but sometimes, even though I’m the boss, I have to respect the other departments too.”

That balance between ambition and caution defines the current situation. Trippier was not signed as a squad player. He arrived as a cornerstone of the rebuild — a leader in the dressing room, a mentor for younger players, and a reliable performer capable of influencing matches through his delivery from wide areas and his defensive experience. His absence has been felt both on and off the pitch. Wolves have shown moments of quality but have also looked vulnerable defensively, conceding regularly and struggling to maintain control in key periods of games.

The timing of the update is significant. Sheffield United represent a stern test. Bramall Lane is a difficult venue, and the home side will be motivated to put pressure on a Wolves team still finding its rhythm under Peixoto. The presence or absence of Trippier, even if only for a cameo, could influence the shape of the contest. A fully fit Trippier offers leadership, organisational quality and a different dimension in possession. A half-fit version risks further setback. Peixoto’s reluctance to commit him from the start reflects that calculation.

For Wolves supporters, the injury has been a source of growing concern. Trippier’s signing was one of the more eye-catching pieces of summer business, a statement that the club intended to compete at the top end of the Championship with experience as well as youth. Watching him limited to the treatment room and the training pitch while the side navigates a demanding early schedule has tested patience. Peixoto’s latest comments will do little to ease that anxiety. Progress is being made, but it is slow, measured and without guarantees.

The manager has repeatedly stressed the importance of collective solutions. In Trippier’s absence, others have been asked to step up. The defensive unit has rotated, full-back options have been tested, and the team has had to adapt its build-up patterns. Results have been mixed. There have been encouraging performances mixed with periods of vulnerability. Peixoto has accepted that the defensive record needs improvement and has spoken about the need for greater street-smarts, better management of game states, and more consistency across ninety minutes.

Trippier’s potential return, even in a limited capacity, would represent a step toward the squad Peixoto wants to work with. The former England international’s influence extends beyond his own performances. Younger players look to him. Set-piece routines are sharpened by his delivery. The dressing-room tone benefits from his presence. Those intangible qualities are difficult to replace and help explain why the club is being so careful with his recovery.

There is also the longer-term perspective. At 35, Trippier’s body requires management. The Championship is a physically demanding division, with congested fixtures and little recovery time. Pushing him back too soon could lead to a more serious recurrence or a compensatory injury elsewhere. Peixoto and the medical team are clearly prioritising a sustainable return over any short-term fix. That approach is sensible, even if it frustrates those eager to see the full squad available.

The Sheffield United match will provide the next chapter in the story. If Trippier makes the bench and is introduced late, it will be a significant moment — the first on-pitch contribution of his Wolves career since the opening day. If he is left out entirely, it will underline the caution that currently surrounds his fitness. Either way, Peixoto’s update has framed expectations. Supporters should not anticipate a sudden, complete return. Progress will be incremental.

Beyond the individual, the situation highlights the broader challenge facing Peixoto in his first season at the club. Building a promotion-challenging side requires depth, availability and continuity. Injuries to key experienced players disrupt that process. The manager’s public comments suggest he is managing the situation with a clear head, resisting the temptation to accelerate recoveries for the sake of immediate results. Whether that patience is rewarded will depend on how quickly Trippier and the other absentees can be reintegrated without further interruption.

For now, the message is one of measured concern. Trippier is training. He is closer than he was. But he is not ready to start, and any involvement will be carefully rationed. In the high-stakes environment of a Championship promotion race, that constitutes a worrying update for a club that invested in his leadership and quality for precisely these kinds of fixtures.

Peixoto will continue to work with the players available to him. The group must find ways to be competitive and difficult to play against while the injured list shortens. The hope inside the club is that Trippier’s return, when it is fully confirmed, will provide both a footballing and psychological lift. Until then, caution remains the overriding theme.

The trip to Sheffield United will test Wolves’ current resources. It will also offer the latest evidence of how close Trippier is to contributing again. Peixoto has been transparent about the situation. The worrying element is not a lack of information, but the clear indication that one of the squad’s most important players is still some distance from full availability. In a results-driven business, that distance matters.
